IAES Statement About the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

By the IAES Innovations and Developments Team

Introduction

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, serve as a universal framework and blueprint for achieving a more sustainable and equitable future for all by 2030. Adopted by all 193 United Nations(UN) Member States in 2015, they represent a collective "to-do list" for the planet, aiming to end poverty, protect the environment, and ensure peace and prosperity. The purpose of this article is to provide the IAES principles about the SDGs.

Core Principles and Roles

Universal Call to Action: Unlike previous initiatives, the SDGs apply to all countries—developed and developing alike—requiring domestic delivery and international contribution.

Integrated and Indivisible: The goals are interconnected; progress in one area (e.g., climate action) often depends on or supports progress in another (e.g., sustainable cities or clean energy).

"Leave No One Behind": A central pledge to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable and reach those furthest behind first.

Three Dimensions of Sustainability: They balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability in a single framework.

Overview of the 17 Goals

The goals are typically categorised into three main pillars:
